Google Talk Federation Update

August 31st, 2005

A presumed developer from Google posted a message on the Jabber Developer’s mailing list stating that Google will indeed (and as expected) open XMPP’s S2S feature claiming that they are still finishing the code for it and will first test it with a closed list of partners. No estimate date was announce for the public availability. Assuming it’s true, it’s good news.

On related news this whole Google Talk S2S thing started a huge thread regarding SPIM on both the jdev list and the JSF’s Standards-JIG list and anti-SPIM proto JEPs are popping up as we speak.

First steps. Hell began.

August 29th, 2005

Untech. Beatriz just gave her first unattended steps, what a great moment! Mom and dad were quietly having dinner and she decided it was time to do it, got up and started walking, naturally. We just starred in disbelief. And she seemed to like it, in a few moments there she was happily doing her rounds through the house as if she knew exactly what and how to do it. I’m stunned. Of course the camera had no batteries or tapes. :)

Update on Google Talk

August 24th, 2005

Well it’s out and lots of question have been answered both with the availability of the service and with a minimalist Developers FAQ on the site.

In a nutshell:

  • S2S and DNS SRV records are turned off. They don’t clarify if they’re going to open them, many speculate they will. For now they ask us to send them an E-Mail asking for federation. I did and received an Automatic reply with a ticket ID.
  • When we invite a friend to GMail from our account, regardless of it’s E-Mail domain (initially I thought It would happen to @gmail.com contacts), it’s added to the XMPP roster. This is weird because they don’t have XMPP S2S open yet so I can’t IM them. But it’s the proof Gmail has a strong unified contact list engine behind the scenes.
  • There’s a group for Google Talk discussions available.
  • There’s some people asking for Asterisk’s native protocol IAX too.
  • The VoIP/SIP people is wondering if they’re going to use ENUM which would open the service further and contribute for interoperability.
  • There are rumours that iChat could do voice call to Google Talk. Not true. Hoax.
  • There’s no offline messages support. Rather than that, Google’s client uses GMail’s Webmail to send an E-Mail to your offline buddies.
  • VoIP implementation and relationship with XMPP as not *yet* been reverse engineered but it’s on many people’s TODO.list, including mine.
  • Just crossed my mind that if you want, you now have a very easy and well documented API to authenticate Gmail E-mail’s credentials.
  • As you would expect from using XMPP you can logon with as many clients as you want (tried two) with the same account at the same time.
  • People talked to me about Google Desktop integration but I haven’t checked.
  • File transfers and avatars are not supported by Google’s client yet, so no JEP adoption advocacy for now :)
  • Google’s client uses JEP-0115 to query/inform the other peer’s client capabilities and reports the “voice-v1″ capability.
  • Google’s client doesn’t respond to disco queries.
  • Google’s client doesn’t send or react to jabber:x:event messages.

UPDATE: There’s an interesting thread going on the JSF members list. And a reply from stpeter which I fully subscribe.

More news soon :)

GIM aka Google Talk is Out and working

August 24th, 2005

It’s old news for Internet standards but Google Talk has opened their server (not the service yet).

Enough to confirm it’s XMPP/Jabber. I was able to use my Gmail account both with Psi, iChat and AdiumX (libgaim based so all clients based on GAIM should work).

  • Works with plain 5222 connections but you need TLS (Gaim clients and iChat support that)
  • Works with SSL 5223 with any client, including Psi.
  • You need to set “allow plain passwords” if your client has that option.
  • S2S seems closed for the moment and no DNS SRV records are available for google.com, gmail, com or talk.gmail.com yet.
  • No agents or components can be found while browsing (disco, agents or browse) for any of those domains.

There’s some integration with the GMail webmail already, namely:

  • Common contact lists. You can see your IM buddies in your E-Mail contact list. No distintion is made. JIDs are E-mails period!
  • If you add a gmail E-mail account to your Webmail account list, the XMPP server will send you a presence subscription of type none for the new contact. I guess their client will react to that and ask a subscribe to other peer immediatly.
  • No new e-mail alerts or webbased presence icons are visible yet.

Some questions without answers (yet):

  • Which XMPP server are they using ? It’s not XCP from Jabber Inc. because we run one at @sapo.pt and it’s doesn’t behave like one. Obviously doesn’t seem like any Opensource server too. Best bet is that it’s their own work, and we’re very curious.
  • Are they opening S2S at all ? We hope we don’t see Google on the IM federation business. That’s so NOT Jabber, NOT good.
  • VoIP details ? We’ll have to wait for tomorow.
  • What kind of integration will we see with their other services Blogs, Search, AdWords, Gmail ? Google over XMPP would be very sexy :)
  • Google is mainly a Web application. Is WebIM planed ? poll/bind will be supported ?
  • What will be the mid term impact of this on the Jabber community, adoption, JSF and JEP standards/adoption?
  • Will Google be the reason for closing the pubsub JEP and kickoff missing for it’s wide adoption ?

I think this is a great day for the Jabber community and the Opensource movement in general of proportions I haven’t seem in a while, I feel happy.

PS: Their server seems to be up and down closing connections. They must be readying the beast.

DYI Biohacking

August 20th, 2005

Came up with this catchy term on a Slashdot news and decided to Google it up just for fun. Wow! There’s a ton of ordinary people digging and hacking bio stuff these days, many of them on their own houses and home labs. It’s cool and scary at the same time, it’s the future and it’s coming fast. This is the next big thing, forget Internet. Just a few goodies I found while browsing:

Um E-Mail para todos os cidadãos

August 14th, 2005
